World equity indexes posted a wide dispersion of performance in 2016. While all major markets recorded gains, U.S. indexes posted much stronger results than international. The U.S. small-cap index posted the highest performance, up 26%, while the technology and biotechnology heavy NASDAQ composite index was up 9%. Developed international markets were up only modestly in 2016. Emerging market equities were up 11% in 2016, after several years of poor absolute performance.
